Despite some progress over the past decade, energy use by the manufacturing and construction sector still accounts for more than a fifth of emissions in China, and 13% of emissions globally and in the rest of Asia. Though the growth in emissions from this sector has leveled off recently, compared to twenty years ago emissions from the energy burned for manufacturing and construction have increased more than in any other single sector besides electricity generation.
In China, the drive for transformation is intensified by the Dual Carbon Goals announced by Beijing in 2020. This ambitious policy calls for peak carbon emissions before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060 – certainly no small task. But the push to decarbonize also represents an opportunity for manufacturing enterprises in Asia and beyond to carve out a competitive advantage while meeting national and international climate goals.
Schneider Electric’s goal is to be the trusted partner in making homes, buildings, infrastructure – and industry – more sustainable and efficient through digital transformation. Boer Power’s partnership with Schneider Electric is a template for how integrating cutting-edge digital solutions with traditional manufacturing expertise can accelerate the transition to profitable sustainability, particularly when it comes to decarbonizing energy-intensive industrial parks. Boer Power is a leading designer, manufacturer and seller of power distribution systems in China.
Boer started producing conventional switchgear equipment 30 years ago, and since then has made strides in energy efficiency and decarbonization through innovations in hardware and systems design. But Boer needed to cultivate expertise in digitization to fully realize China’s Dual Carbon objectives, and that’s where Schneider Electric came in.
So how did they do it?

There is no net-zero without decarbonizing the manufacturing sector. Schneider Electric makes the business case for transforming industry to align with decarbonization goals.

Schneider’s EcoStruxure software provided Boer Power with a smart grid solution that enabled real-time monitoring and analysis of grid data which improved grid efficiency and stability. The EcoStruxure solution also allowed for real-time monitoring and optimization of energy consumption. Combined with the introduction of renewable wind and solar power generation and storage to replace fossil fuel consumption, Boer Power realized a remarkable 16% energy savings and a reduction of nearly 50 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in 2022 alone.
Boer’s solar power generation success demonstrates how renewables integration can both reduce environmental impact and create new revenue streams. Using a previously unutilized roof, Boer Power built 1.5 MW of photovoltaic generation capacity that not only provides close to 400,000 kWh of their own consumption per year, but also returns 1.4+ million kWh to the grid which means the investment not only displaces purchased electricity but boosts revenue. In addition to software, Schneider Electric provides Boer Power with expert technical training, global industry networking opportunities, and comprehensive customer service. This work has not gone unrecognized. Boer Power has garnered multiple domestic and international awards and commendations that set it apart from competitors.
In addition to recognition for environmental impact and a competitive advantage domestically in China, these advances also give Boer Power an advantage in other regulatory markets like the European Union. The environmental performance of its products mean that Boer can do business internationally without risking emissions penalties, and also establish itself as a global player in this space.
Importantly, pairing digital solutions with traditional manufacturing in Boer Power’s own business has had knock-on effects on its partners and clients who have also benefited from this integration. One example is Boer Power’s Power Management Project in the Wuxi Liyuan Economic Development Zone, in collaboration with Schneider Electric. As this well-established economic zone has expanded, not only has energy consumption increased but demand has become more complex and more variable. Combining energy conservation and emissions reductions with continued economic expansion required innovation in energy management. Through the integration of Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure architecture and platform coupled with the deployment of an intelligent electric vehicle charging system and solar power generation system, the project ensured the safety and stability of the power system, reduced energy consumption and costs, and reduced carbon emissions.
Boer’s achievements are just one example of the potential of smart, sustainable manufacturing. Schneider Electric’s solutions are scalable and replicable, and not only help companies meet decarbonization goals but generate revenue, enhance competitiveness relative to peers, and offer added value to clients and partners.
